Constructed Realities

Bringing together works by Mustapha Azeroual, Hiba Baddou, Joana Choumali, Nicolas Henry, M'hammed Kilito and Mous Lamrabat, this exhibition explores photography as a space that exists between documentary and fiction, observation and reconstruction.

Through documentary practices, carefully staged compositions, embroidery, abstraction and experimental processes, these artists use photography as a medium for observing, transforming and reinventing reality.

Although rooted in distinct visual languages, the practices presented here share a common ambition: to expand the possibilities of the photographic image. Whether through Mous Lamrabat's constructed, surreal worlds; Nicolas Henry's participatory theatrical environments; M'hammed Kilito's sensitive engagement with landscape and lived territories; Joana Choumali's meditative interventions using embroidery and textiles; Hiba Baddou's contemplative observations of landscapes shaped by the unpredictable forces of nature; or Mustapha Azeroual's material experiments with light and perception, photography becomes a space where realities are framed, mediated and reconfigured.

Throughout the exhibition, documentary language coexists with fiction, speculation, intervention, staging and performance. Several artists draw upon the conventions of documentary photography while extending them through material experimentation, subjective storytelling, collective participation, shifts in perspective and other ways of constructing the image. Portraiture, landscape, gesture and abstraction become spaces in which cultural memory, identity and emotional experience are reconstructed and reinterpreted.

Rather than presenting photography as objective evidence, the exhibition approaches the image as a fluid form capable of embracing intimacy, participation, projection, ambiguity and fiction simultaneously. Together, these artists create works that inhabit the space between documentation and imagination, broadening our understanding of how photography can shape—not merely reflect—contemporary experience.

Mustapha Azeroual

Created using the gum bichromate process, Mustapha Azeroual's Actin and Monade series produce luminous abstractions generated solely through the action of light upon photosensitive material.

Masks, flashes and repeated exposures allow the image to build up in layers, creating a fertile tension between painting and photography.
